Coal ash is still dangerous, even when it is not in the air as an air pollutant, coal ash is still dangerous to the environment. When the coal ash is in a pond for storage, it can still leak out and contaminate any nearby water supplies. Many ponds are not lined, so the contaminated water can seep directly into the ground and contaminate the groundwater. Coal ash is also a dangerous carcinogen, and can increase the chance of developing cancer.
